Studio Thalo is an artist collective and studio space comprised of Olivia Levins Holden, Donald Thomas, and Nell Pierce. We have worked together as community muralists since 2015, and in 2016 we began to translate those skills into Graphic Recording. We show up to community conversations and events as listeners and artists, and we paint Graphic Recordings in the form of portable murals on vinyl (average of 6’x4’) that capture the heart of what we hear. The Graphic Recordings incorporate phrases and imagery directly from the community, and they live with organizations beyond the events or meetings themselves as tools for continued engagement. Our paintings can serve as visual reminders and reflections of the values, voices, and visions within a given community.

As Studio Thalo, we strive to create work in the service of social justice movements, and we bring that lens to every project. We have worked with groups in large institutions such as Macalester College and the University of St. Thomas as well with smaller community organizations like Ananya Dance Theatre and grassroots groups like Art. Music. Politics. (AMP). Together, we have created over 40 Graphic Recordings at events and meetings that center justice, equity, and healing.
